The government has
privatized the major telecom monopolies and competition has seeped into
the essence of every business. Thousands of miles of fiber have already
been laid and many other companies are building their own networks.
Central offices have been upgraded and T1 lines, DSL and cellular phone
penetration rates are growing at astounding rates.
It is expected
that by 2015, India will have more phone lines than the US. The country
is a consumer telecom consumer in the making. With the advent of severe
competition, the quality of the telecom infrastructure, the phone and
data lines has improved dramatically, and US companies now confidently
handle their back-office operations from India.
The investment in thousands of miles of fiber by US
companies laid all around the world eventually found a killer app: Bangalore,
India.
